Chinese New Year is only a week away from today this year. The date of the Chinese New Year is followed by the Chinese lunar calendar. Therefore it “changes” every year on the BC/AD dating system. Usually it is toward the end of January or beginning of February.
Families get together and have reunion dinner on the
Chinese New Year’s Eve, almost like the Christmas dinner for western families. Streets
are particularly calm at this time of the year.
It
is a custom to have a good stock of delicious food and snack at home for the
Chinese New Year. In the capital of Taiwan, Taipei, there is the
famous Big Street for New Year’s Shopping in a historic district where you will
see red brick buildings from more than one hundred years ago. Di-hua Street
used to be a very busy commercial wholesaler area at the end of the Qing
dynasty where boats could unload their goods right behind a store building. Of
course, with the city development, the cannel was gone. All you see are roads
now.
The New Year market in Taiwan reminds me of the marché de Noël in France and Weihnachtsmarkt in the German-speaking countries, like Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Small and private traders have a stall selling food related to the festive time of the year and handmade gifts in wood, porcelain or other materials, most of the time in a Nativity scene. A cup of spiced and warm Glühwein (mulled wine) is always a delight when walking in an outdoor Christmas market in Europe.
Below
are a few images shot today from Di-hua Street and Christmas markets in Europe.
No matter where you are, do not forget to celebrate for the New Year and for our lives.

According
to the Chinese zodiac, this year will be the year of dragon. Don’t forget to
wish any friend of of yours that is of Chinese origin “gong xi fa tsai,” literally
meaning congratulations and get a good fortune in Mandarin Chinese.
Last
but not least, we would like to share with you another style of our ballet
flats in red, which is often used at an occasion of celebration, such as a
wedding or the Chinese New Year.
